Description

Authentic Mexican buñuelos are crispy, golden dough fritters with a sweet cinnamon-sugar coating. These delightful treats are easy to prepare and perfect for any occasion, especially festive celebrations. Enjoy them fresh and warm, dusted with cinnamon and sugar for a deliciously sweet finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup water (add more as needed)
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon-sugar (1/4 cup sugar mixed with 1/2 tsp cinnamon)

Instructions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Whisk to ensure everything is evenly distributed.
  2. Add the wet ingredients: In the same bowl, add the melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and water. Mix until a dough forms. You may need to add more water if the dough feels too dry.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover with a cloth and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  4. Roll the dough: Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball out into thin circles, about 6 to 8 inches wide.
  5. Heat the oil: In a large frying pan, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat. Test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into it. If it sizzles and floats, the oil is ready.
  6. Fry the buñuelos: Carefully place each dough circle into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 1 to 2 minutes per side. Use tongs to turn them and ensure they cook evenly.
  7. Drain and coat with cinnamon-sugar: Once fried, remove the buñuelos from the oil and drain them on paper towels. While they are still warm, coat them generously with cinnamon-sugar.

Notes

  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour until it becomes manageable.
  • To ensure even frying, don’t overcrowd the pan—fry the buñuelos in batches.
  • If you’re looking for a healthier version, you can bake the buñuelos at 350°F for 8-10 minutes instead of frying them.
