Description
Irish Bread and Butter Pudding is a classic traditional dessert made with buttered bread, creamy vanilla custard, and gently spiced dried fruit, baked until golden and comforting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices white bread (day-old preferred)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup raisins or currants
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg or cinnamon
- 1 tbsp sugar for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and butter a medium baking dish.
- Butter one side of each bread slice and cut into triangles or halves.
- Arrange the bread in overlapping layers in the dish, sprinkling raisins between layers.
- In a bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the custard evenly over the bread and gently press to soak.
- Let the mixture rest for 15 minutes to fully absorb the custard.
- Sprinkle the top lightly with sugar if using.
- Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden on top and just set in the center.
- Cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread for best texture.
- Cover loosely with foil if the top browns too quickly.
- Can be assembled ahead and baked when needed.
- Serve with custard sauce, cream, or caramel.
